Day Seven: 7 Sept 2010

Yesterday was mostly academic.  We went to OT class in the morning followed by our first Jewish Civilization class, where we talked mostly about how to define 'Judaism.'  I hadn't really thought about it too much before, but it's pretty hard cuz it crosses cultural, ethnic, AND religious boundaries.  The teacher is a Jew, and he's pretty up-front lol.  Every time someone gave an answer that was historically inaccurate he paused, said "...O..K...but.." and kept going.  He seems pretty intelligent, we'll see how much his mannerisms get on my nerves by the end of the semester haha.

After class, lunch and some free time, I went to my first Arabic class. The teacher is HILARIOUS--I can't even describe how. The first student he called on is named Tawna, and he calls her 'tuna' now.  I guess you'd have to be there.  Anyway, Arabic is an awesome language. i can see why it's so hard though--some of the sounds are really weird.  It does sound really cool though, and the script is really pretty.  I wish I had more time to study it than just four months.

The last class of note was our Arab Civilization class, taught by an Arab Christian (go figure).  We learned about the Hijra lunar calendar, the tenets of Islam, talked about Muhammad and other stuff.  It was interesting, I was just super tired and it was kind of hard to understand the teacher. For both of the Civ classes I went to yesterday I got huge books with tons of reading...sigh.  Oh well. It should be a very informative semester, though.

After class, I fell asleep at 7:30 and didn't wake up until 6am this morning.  I'm still suffering from jet lag!  Anyway, I'm about to go to class. Till tonight!
