Day Twenty: 20 Sept 2010

Not too much to talk about today, mostly just driving.  We got up fairly early and got to the border crossing pretty early, and it took awhile to get through (sheesh! I guess they have to be strict but really...they made me pull all the electronics out of my bag and we had to go through five different checkpoints).  Afterwards we drove through the Sinai peninsula to get to Cairo.  Believe it or not, the desert really is hot!  Goodness...I understand much better why the Israelites complained; it would've been terrible!  We stopped at a pretty sketch place for lunch (the bathrooms were just as they said they'd be--quite literally holes in the ground lol), and got to Cairo about 6 or 7 in the evening.  Of course we all about wet our pants to see the Pyramids--especially with the sunset they were awesome!  We had our first glimpses of Cairo, too: the City of a Thousand Minarets and 17+ million people!  It's pretty third-world, too--pretty dirty and lots of buildings that look like they'd been hit by multiple earthquakes.  We settled in at the hotel (called the Oasis--pretty nice actually), then went to a Sound and Lights show at the Pyramids.  The Pyramids and Sphinx were cool, the show...lol well let's just say I didn't expect a history lesson with a couple lasers but that's alright.  Afterwards we went back to our wonderfully air-conditioned hotel room and that was that!
